As we approach the end of 2025, we would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who has contributed to SirkAQ so far. Together, we have taken important steps toward solving one of the aquaculture industry’s greatest environmental challenges: plastic waste from decommissioned fish farming facilities. Through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation, we have shown that it is possible to turn plastic waste into a resource—and that circular solutions provide both environmental benefits and new business opportunities.
Here’s what we have achieved in 2025:
- We have produced new aquaculture equipment from recycled plastic and launched several facilities made from recycled materials at sea.
- Equipment is being reused and recertified for an additional 15–20 years of operation.
- The project has contributed to important regulatory changes and delivered environmental documentation for aquaculture equipment.
- We have developed digital product passports for aquaculture equipment, ensuring full traceability throughout the value chain.
- Circular choices in plastic equipment have so far helped avoid emissions of over 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalents and created 10–20 new jobs in Norway.

The road ahead—2026 will be an important year:
Next year, SirkAQ enters its final year of operation. We will complete the last tests, carry out full-scale testing of load-bearing structures made from recycled materials, and deliver final documentation and recommendations to authorities and the industry. In autumn 2026, we will host a closing conference, where we will share experiences, results, and the way forward for circular solutions in aquaculture.
Thank you for your effort, commitment, and collaboration throughout the past year. Together, we have shown that change is possible—and that Norway can take a leading role in developing a circular economy for the aquaculture industry.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
